I am pro-choice, and I am not afraid to express it. I am all about a woman having the right to choose what she wants to do with her body. As I graced the campus of one of the universities in the state of Florida, a young lady approached me and asked if I would join the cause to end abortion. I told her, “ no”. She looked at me and said, “you support abortion?” I looked at her and said, “absolutely, a woman has the right to choose what she wants to do with her body. Why do you care and how does my choice to have an abortion affect you?” She explained that an innocent life is being taken. ( I immediately thought black lives matter, but that’s a story for another day) “That happens every day”, I replied.  “But, you have options”, she mentioned. Me playing the devil’s advocate, I asked her what options are those? She said, “you could give it up for adoption or to a family member. I replied, “ok, would you adopt my black child?” She looked at me with a distasteful look on her face. Next, I said, “what adoption agencies do you recommend?” No answer. Then I asked, “did you ever stop to think why a woman may choose to have an abortion?” Without answering again, she walked off.

With that experience, I did a little more research on my neighboring abortion clinics. To be honest, I wanted see how I would be greeted by anti-abortionist.  I made an appointment to have a consultation for birth control. When I arrived, I was greeted by threats of me going to hell, god will never forgive me, and how I am a hypocrite because I protest for black lives, yet I am killing an unborn black child. These pro-life people do not even know the type of services I am going in for! They just assumed that I am having an abortion. Once I arrived inside the clinic, the room was filled with 20 or so ladies. Age grouped varied as well. They looked like ordinary women to me. I grabbed my clipboard and started filling out the information. The girl next to me asked if I was nervous. I told her no. Then she said, “good”. “There is nothing to be nervous about, both procedures are safe”. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the procedures for abortion, there is the abortion pill or vacuum aspiration. As I looked around the room, I thought about the multiple reasons for why some of these women would have this procedure done: poverty, unstable family, pregnancy resulting from rape, health, or maybe she does not want the child. No matter what their reasons were, it was still her choice and god will still love her.

As I left the clinic, I couldn’t help but to think about the comment of black lives matter. This comment validated the true ignorance that most Americans are plagued with. Failing to actually learn the history behind the saying leads to ignorant remarks. Black lives matter has nothing to do with a black woman having an abortion. One is protesting about the justice for black lives, who are repetitive victims of systematic racism, racial profiling, and police brutality. The other supports a woman’s choice to remove  an unwanted pregnancy. I understand that you want to protest against abortion. Did you read that carefully? I said, “I UNDERSTAND”. That means I see your perspective for why you wouldn’t want someone to terminate a pregnancy. I am not a hypocrite, yet I have been approached by several hypocritical individuals. If you stand for something, support it. Don’t just support the part that sounds good to you, support the entire cause. If you are an individual that is pro-life, I challenge you to take the time to understand why some women are choosing to have an abortion. After all, you never know when the tables will soon turn.
